Human Trafficking Prevention Month is a time to pause, reflect, and recommit to the work of protecting the dignity and safety of every individual in our community. Observed each January, the month serves as both a call to awareness and a reminder that human trafficking is not a distant or abstract issue—it happens in communities like ours and affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities.

At YWCA Carlisle & Cumberland County, prevention and response are deeply interconnected. While raising awareness is essential, our work does not stop there. Survivors of human trafficking need immediate, compassionate, and trauma-informed support, and our Sexual Assault and Human Trafficking Crisis Services are designed to meet those needs. From crisis intervention and advocacy to accompaniment and referrals, our staff walk alongside survivors as they navigate safety, healing, and next steps—always centering choice, dignity, and empowerment.

Prevention also means education and collaboration. Through outreach and training, we work to help community members, service providers, and local organizations recognize the signs of trafficking and understand how to respond safely and effectively. Knowledge equips communities to intervene earlier, reduce harm, and connect individuals to help before exploitation deepens.

A critical part of this effort is our involvement in the local Human Trafficking Coalition. The coalition brings together law enforcement, healthcare providers, social service agencies, educators, and community partners to share information, coordinate responses, and strengthen systems of support for survivors. By working collectively, we are better able to identify gaps, address barriers, and ensure survivors are not navigating complex systems alone.

Human Trafficking Prevention Month reminds us that meaningful change requires both vigilance and compassion. At YWCA Carlisle & Cumberland County, we remain committed to supporting survivors, educating our community, and collaborating with partners to prevent exploitation and promote safety, justice, and dignity for all.
