Assisting elementary-aged girls in Cumberland County with literacy improvement through reading and writing
About this program
Coming Fall 2019! YWCA Carlisle’s Storytellers is an after school program for elementary-aged students to develop their vocabulary and spelling skills, reading fluency, and writing ability through one-on-one support from reading tutors. Storytellers meets once a week from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at participating elementary schools. Through Storytellers, participants will receive a healthy snack and crucial support for academic success. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in our pet therapy program, and read to a certified therapy dog throughout the course of the program. Storytellers engages participants’ creative minds to allow them to soar! As part of our racial justice initiatives, YWCA Carlisle partners with community organizations to provide two books featuring diverse characters to each participant throughout the course of the program.
YWCA Carlisle is seeking volunteers for the 2019-2020 school year. We offer two types of volunteer positions: Storytellers Location Director and Storytellers Reading Tutors. Volunteers must obtain 2019 clearances for PA Child Abuse, PA Criminal History, and FBI/Federal Background and Fingerprinting prior to starting with our program. We ask that volunteers commit to once a week for the duration of the school year.
Please review the job descriptions posted on the page for further information, and contact Ashley Burkett, Community Impact Manager, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 717-243-3818 if you are interested in volunteering with us.
Therapy Dog Integration
At each program location, we plan a visit from a therapy dog at least twice a month. The therapy dog provides a furry, friendly listener for students to practice their reading skills with in a safe, comfortable environment. Participants in the Storytellers program rotate through a schedule and take turns reading to the therapy dogs.
If you are a therapy dog owner interested in participating in our program, please review the Reading Therapy Dog Overview and contact Ashley Burkett, Community Impact Manager, at email@example.com or 717-243-3818 for more information.
