Creating opportunities in STEM for elementary-aged girls in Cumberland County
About this program
Club Cosmic Overview:
NEW! YWCA Carlisle’s Club Cosmic is a free after school program for elementary-aged girls designed to create opportunities and interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Club Cosmic meets every week, with the first two weeks of the month for the K-2nd grade group and the last two weeks of the month for the 3rd-5th grade group, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at participating elementary schools. Club Cosmic is not held on the fifth week of a month. Club Cosmic provides a healthy after school snack for each participant. Girls will participate in fun, interactive activities relating to STEM subjects, and will be given the opportunity to end the year with a field trip. Through STEM programming, Club Cosmic will build resiliency, foster creativity, develop problem-solving skills, and encourage experimentation to promote personal and academic success.
Elementary-aged girls in K-5th grades are referred by teachers and guidance staff for participation in our program.
Hamilton Elementary, Bellaire Elementary, and LeTort Elementary staff coordinate registration with YWCA Carlisle through their school offices.
Location, Date, +Time:
Club Cosmic is facilitated at Hamilton Elementary, Bellaire Elementary, and LeTort Elementary from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Participants are divided into K-2nd grades and 3rd-5th grades; the program day depends on the location and the grade level. Scheduling information is obtained by contacting the school offices or YWCA Carlisle directly.
The program runs from September through May, following the Carlisle Area School District calendar.
YWCA Carlisle is seeking volunteers for the 2019-2020 school year. We offer two types of volunteer positions: Club Cosmic Location Directors and STEM Assistants. Volunteers must obtain 2019 clearances for PA Child Abuse, PA Criminal History, and FBI/Federal Background and Fingerprinting prior to starting with our program. We ask that volunteers commit to twice a week for the duration of the school year.
